In accordance with Law 99 of 1993, 155 municipalities in 6 Departments that provide water to the Cauca River basin or are located in the area of the Hidroituango reservoir have received nearly $110 billion in transfers, for power generation from the hydroelectric project, owned by the HIDROITUANGO Company. In 2011, HIDROITUANGO S.A. signed a BOOMT contract with EPM for the construction and operation of the plant, giving it autonomy in contracting decisions. In 2023, EPM changed the project's contractors, a decision against which HIDROITUANGO S.A. issued formal alerts for possible delays. These communications are input to the Antioquia Comptroller's Office's investigation into the impact of the change in contractors.

With a generation of 9,173 GWh during 2025, the Hidroituango project, owned by the company HIDROITUANGO S.A., established itself as one of the pillars of the national electricity system, providing 10.87% of the country's total energy demand, which reached 84,412 GWh in the same period.

During the first eleven months of 2025, Hidroituango produced 8,335 GWh, which represents 10.88% of the national electricity demand and demonstrates the fundamental role that this project plays for the country's energy security.
