During the first eleven months of 2025, Hidroituango produced 8,335 GWh, what it represents 10.88% of national electricity demand and demonstrates the fundamental role that this project plays for the country's energy security.
This contribution is in addition to the recent history of the project: between 2022 and 2024, Hidroituango generated 11,574 GWh, equivalent to 6.8% of national demand.
In 2024 specifically, its generation reached 6,998 GWh, a figure sufficient to supply the annual domestic demand of a department such as Antioquia or a city the size of Bogotá.

A pillar of clean and reliable supply
With an installed capacity of 2,400 MW, designed with its eight generation units, Hidroituango is the largest hydroelectric plant in Colombia, designed to serve up to 17% of national energy demand in its full operation.
Even with only four of its turbines operating in the initial phases, the project already demonstrates its impact: the energy generated by this minimum set would be enough to cover the domestic demand of a metropolitan area such as Medellín.
In addition to its quantitative contribution, Hidroituango represents a commitment to sustainability and the reduction of the environmental footprint: its full operation makes it possible to avoid the emission of approximately 4.4 million tons of CO₂ per year.
Structural benefit for the SIN and for Colombia
- The Hidroituango generation provides stability and reliability to the national electrical system, reducing the need to resort to expensive and polluting thermal sources, especially in critical times.
- With guaranteed firm energy, even under adverse conditions, the project reinforces security of supply, a key element for the country's competitiveness and for avoiding rationing.
- Hidroituango is not only a source of energy: it promotes territorial development, generates environmental benefits, and promotes social welfare in municipalities in the area of influence.
